How to Increase Productivity: The Counterintuitive Advice to Stop Being Lazy and Get More Done

Recently, I found myself in a productivity slump, desperate to learn how to increase productivity.

My to-do list seemed endless, and the hours in the day were woefully insufficient.

I was drowning in emails, and it was stressing me out.

I was caught in a neverending cycle of doing more yet achieving less.

Then, I heard this story:

A Tale of Two Lumberjacks

Once, there were two lumberjacks, equally strong and skilled.

The first lumberjack worked tirelessly from dawn till dusk, chopping trees.

He believed the key to success was hard work and long hours.

The second lumberjack, however, spent the first hour of each day sharpening his axe.

When he finally started chopping, his axe sliced through the wood like butter.

Over time, the first lumberjack noticed that despite his longer hours, he was cutting fewer trees than his colleague.

The difference?

The second lumberjack understood that efficiency and preparation were just as important as the act of chopping.

The Lincoln Philosophy

Abraham Lincoln famously stated: “Give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”

Lincoln wasn’t just talking about tree cutting; he advocated for working smarter, not harder.

This principle is timeless, and in our modern, fast-paced world, it’s more relevant than ever.

The Modern-Day Axe Sharpening

In our lives, “sharpening the axe” can mean setting aside time to make our systems more efficient. It can be about stepping back, reassessing our methods, and investing in tools, knowledge, relationships, and skills that enhance our results and productivity.

For example, I can spend hours doing something inefficiently, only to do it all over again tomorrow. However, if I can take a few hours out of my week this week, I can save myself a few minutes every day. While the tradeoff may not be apparent right away, over the years, I can save hours of my life!

The process of sharpening our internal axes is also important. Taking care of our mental, emotional, and physical health can ensure we’re mentally and physically primed for the challenges ahead.

Unfortunately, this approach can feel counter-intuitive. After all, how can taking time off to refine our methods lead to more productivity?

But that’s exactly where the magic lies.

It’s helpful to remember that when we bulldoze through life and try to “just work harder,” we ultimately become less effective. Our cognitive abilities slow down, creativity dwindles, and our emotional reservoirs run dry.

On the other hand, dedicating time to meditation, exercise, or learning a new skill might seem like a detour from our immediate goals. However, these activities rejuvenate us, providing clarity and energy, which, in turn, boost our productivity.

Benefits of Sharpening the Axe

Practicing the habit of sharpening the axe has clear benefits, especially if you’re wondering how to increase productivity:

  • Time-Saving Systems: Assessing systems and creating better workflows can save you time in the long run.
  • Enhanced Focus and Clarity: Taking time out to care for oneself clears the mental clutter, allowing for sharper focus when we return to our tasks.
  • Sustained Energy: Regular self-care prevents burnout, ensuring we have a steady reservoir of energy.
  • Increased Creativity: Stepping back from work allows us to return with fresh perspectives and innovative ideas.
  • Emotional Resilience: Self-care strengthens our emotional well-being, making us more resilient in the face of challenges.
  • Long-Term Health Benefits: Regular self-care contributes to long-term physical and mental health, reducing the risk of chronic stress and related illnesses.

How to Sharpen Your Axe

If you ask yourself, “What can I do to sharpen my axe?” or Google “How to increase productivity,” Take a look at the options below. Then, commit to pick at least one and watch how your life improves.

  1. Prioritize Learning and Development: Dedicate time each week to learning new skills or improving existing ones. This could involve online courses, reading, or attending workshops. Continuous learning keeps your mind sharp and prepares you for new challenges.
  2. Implement Effective Time Management: Use tools like time-blocking, prioritization techniques (like the Eisenhower Box), and digital apps to manage your time more efficiently. This helps focus on what’s truly important, reducing time spent on less critical tasks.
  3. Regular Physical Exercise: Engage in regular physical activity. Exercise not only improves your physical health but also boosts mental clarity and reduces stress, making you more productive.
  4. Practice Mindfulness and Meditation: Incorporate mindfulness practices or meditation into your daily routine. These practices enhance focus, reduce stress, and improve emotional regulation, helping you to be more present and effective in your tasks.
  5. Cultivate a Healthy Work-Life Balance: Ensure you have a healthy balance between work and personal life. Take time off when needed, pursue hobbies, and spend quality time with family and friends to recharge and gain new perspectives.
  6. Improve Your Workspace: Organize and optimize your workspace for efficiency. A clutter-free, well-organized environment can significantly boost productivity and focus.
  7. Adopt a Growth Mindset: Embrace challenges and failures as opportunities for growth. A growth mindset encourages resilience and a proactive approach to learning and personal development.
  8. Practice Gratitude and Positive Thinking: Regularly reflect on what you are grateful for and maintain a positive outlook. This attitude fosters a healthier mental state, reducing the likelihood of burnout.
  9. Network and Build Relationships: Invest time building and maintaining professional and personal relationships. A strong support network can provide new opportunities, advice, and a sense of community.
  10. Regular Health Check-ups and Self-Care: Don’t neglect your health. Regular check-ups, healthy eating, and adequate sleep are crucial. Self-care is an essential component of maintaining the sharpness of your axe.

Remember, sharpening your axe is not a one-time activity but an ongoing process. Consistently applying these tips can significantly improve your productivity and overall quality of life.

Taking Action

So, in this busy and stressful time of year, I encourage you to step back and look at your axe.

Is it as sharp as it could be?

Are you taking care of yourself in a way that enhances your productivity?

Are your systems as efficient as possible?

Maybe you’re not lazy; maybe you’re just burned out.

Remember, self-care and working smarter instead of harder isn’t selfish; it’s essential.

It’s the smartest investment in your journey towards efficiency and well-being.

Let’s not focus on doing more but on doing better.
